Just which residents, and what city department is responsible for litter pick up throughout the city?

While there is an ordinance that states whether property owners or the city is responsible for litter pickup in certain locations, city councilor Steven Long wants the document revised.

“I have submitted a resolution to the full council to have us to re-think the current city ordinance concerning litter cleanup,” Councilor Long say, adding “Cleaning up the city starts with cleaning up the city’s ordinances.”

According to Long, property owners in Fall River and the administration have been arguing for years about just who is responsible for picking up litter in certain areas that are either considered public or private, depending on the viewpoint.

In these instances, the taxpayers say the city while the city claims its the says the property owners that need to clean up litter.

“In order to end the dispute, we need to look more closely at the current ordinance to see what changes are needed,” Long says.

The resolution was submitted for consideration at last night’s council meeting.
