As the details of Fall River’s FY 2021 budget remain unclear, Mayor Paul Coogan will be asking the City Council on Tuesday to approve another one-month appropriation to cover expenses for the month of August.
Last month the council passed a $24.7 million dollar appropriation to cover expenses for the month of July, the first month of the 2021 fiscal year. On Tuesday the Finance Committee and full council will vote to adopt a $17.5 million appropriation to cover expenses for August.
The Mayor has not submitted his FY 2021 budget because of uncertainty around how much the city can expect to receive in aid from the state. The legislature delayed its budget process in response to revenue shortfalls caused by the loss of tax revenue from the COVID-19 pandemic. The legislature is expected to take up an FY 2021 state budget before the end of the month.
Mayor Coogan said that if there are further delays from the state, he may be forced to continue to submit one-month appropriations until a spending plan can be finalized.
