The first item on tonight’s Fall River City Council agenda is to request Mayor Jasiel Correia resign.
Council President Cliff Ponte started that ball rolling after Correia had been arrested on federal charges that allege he committed wire fraud and filing false tax returns in connection with his now defunct business SnoOwl. In addition to the resignation request, councilors will discuss whether to declare Correia unable to perform the duties of mayor in accordance with the City Charter, and also take a vote of “no confidence.”
At it’s last meeting, the council requested the Mayor submit mileage and gas usage of a city-owned vehicle that is mostly used by Correia to conduct city business. Correia had been in possession of the vehicle on October 11th, which was the day of his arrest at a house in Bridgewater.
Correia had indicated he wanted to speak before the council tonight, but has since decided against it. The full council meets at 7:00 p.m. tonight after the finance subcommittee session that begins at 6:00 p.m. As always the meeting will be held at One Government Center and is open to the public.
