This week, the Fall River City Council voted to send back to committee an ordinance allowing the city to break up illegal encampments. The council is looking for clarification on some aspects of the ordinance.
Before the vote, residents spoke out against the measure. Britney Silvia shared her story of homelessness and said the action would put an unfair burden on the homeless who have set up encampments across the city.
Alan Oliver has lived in Fall River for nearly 60 years. He said the council should focus on the broader issue of creating more affordable housing.
City councilor Shawn Cadime said the ordinance is trying to balance ensuring public safety and show empathy to those who are homeless.
