The Fall River City Council this week began a discussion on a proposal by Councilor Cliff Ponte to create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
The councilor says the fund would provide incentives to developers to create more affordable units and stem what he says is an epidemic of housing insecurity across Fall River.
Councilor Ponte met with Mayor Paul Coogan and members of his administration this week on the issue. The mayor says he is not against the creation of the fund. The issue becomes how it will be funded.
The matter will now move to the council’s Ordinance Committee for more debate. The councilor says there are more than 100 communities in Massachusetts that have set up an Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
