Winter Fun for Kids at Fall River Public Library
Not liking what the groundhog told us? Fall River Public Library has some fun events for kids to brighten up the cold, snowy days of winter.
This week, the library’s Winter Craft Series continues with this week’s special Ladybug Valentine Craft. This cute ladybug has a special surprise—a tic-tac-toe game! Kids can put the craft together, then play the game.
Kids can also learn a new magic trick each week! Our Magic Trick Bags are available for pickup in the library or curbside. Each bag contains instructions and props for a fun magic trick, ideas for other tricks kids can do with objects around the house, and a reading list of books about magic. This series continues through February 26th.
Crafts and magic tricks can be picked up curbside or during a scheduled visit to the library. Call the Children’s Room at 508-324-2700, ext. 4, to reserve yours. Our children’s curbside craft and magic trick series are made possible through the generosity of Debby and Richard Danner.
But that’s not all that’s happening in the Children’s Room! We’ve also got a Valentine’s Day Raffle you can enter to win an adorable stuffed puppy on a scooter filled with books. The winner will be announced Thursday, February 11, so register soon. For details, call the children’s room.
Next, children are invited to submit their artwork for our Dr. Seuss Art Contest. To celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday (March 2nd), the library invites children to draw their favorite Dr. Seuss character. We will be accepting entries through Thursday, February 25. Prizes will be awarded in two categories: ages 5 and under and ages 6 – 12.
Artwork in any medium (crayon, colored pencils, paint, etc.) can be emailed to David Mello, Supervisor of Children’s Services, at dmello@sailsinc.org, or parents can drop it off at the Elm Street entrance during our regular curbside hours. For more information, contact Mr. Mello at 508-324-2700, ext. 4.
Programs for Teens and Adults at Fall River Public Library
We can’t gather in person yet, but Fall River Public Library has some exciting online events for both teens and adults to brighten up the cold, snowy days of winter.
Teens who enjoy video games can participate in the library’s FRPL Gaming Stream on Twitch. Join Taylor and his fellow gaming librarians on Wednesday, February 10 and every Wednesday at 3 pm for live gaming chat, reviews, trivia, and history. A Twitch account is not required to watch, but to participate in the chat, viewers must have a free account. For more information, email Taylor at tsilva@sailsinc.org or call 508-324-2700, ext. 123.
For even more video gaming excitement, save the date: Thursday, February 24 at 4 pm. That’s when the library will sponsor a live, interactive Fortnite Tournament, co-hosted by our friends at One Up Games. Registration is required for this free event. To sign up, contact Taylor at 508-324-2700, ext. 123, or email tsilva@sailsinc.org.
The library is also offering a variety of programs for adults this month, from a virtual wine tasting and cookbook club to an eBook training workshop.
First, on Thursday, February, 11 at 6:30 pm, join the Five Town Libraries (Berkley, Dighton, Fall River, Somerset, and Swansea) for a Virtual Wine Tasting with sommelier Gillian Katz. All who register for this program will receive a wine list with suggestions for wine they can purchase, and we will enjoy a chat about the history of wine and suggested food pairings. Registration is through the Swansea Library, but the program is free open to all! Register online at: https://www.swansealibrary.org/adult/events/7426/wine-101-grape-glass.
Next, satisfy your sweet tooth online with the Virtual Cookbook Club, also a program of the Five Town Libraries. It will meet on Tuesday, February 16 at 11 a.m., and the theme for this month is chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! Participants are invited to make one or more recipes from any of the featured cookbooks and share their success stories, tips, and tricks online. This month’s cookbooks are Happiness is Baking, Chocolate is Forever, and Maida Heatter’s Book of Great Chocolate Desserts, all by Maida Heatter. Registration is through the Swansea Library at https://www.swansealibrary.org/node/7422/register.
Finally, learn to download free library ebooks and audiobooks with our Libby Ebook Virtual Training on Wednesday, February 24 starting at 9 am. This free, hands-on workshop will get you started using Libby, the one-tap reading app that makes it so simple to read or listen to books on your phone or tablet. You can sign up for the 30-minute Getting Started class at 9 or 9:30, or the more advanced Libby Deep Dive class at 10:00 to learn even more tips and tricks and get answers to your questions. You are also welcome to sign up for both classes! To register, visit https://overdrive.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_4ulOf2lgR8q9gUOmjlPxuw.
If you don’t already have the Libby app, it’s recommended that you download it before taking the workshop. Libby, by Overdrive, is a free app available from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. You can also use Libby in your web browser by going to libbyapp.com.
