Charlton Memorial Hospital and St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River showed mixed results in the latest safety grades issued by The Leapfrog Group, a national non-profit watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on health care safety and quality.  Charton received a “C” while St. Anne’s earned an “A” in the organization’s fall survey.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades have been issued by The Leapfrog Group for 20 years and focuses on 27 measures of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

Charlton performed below average when it comes to infections incurred by patients as well as instances of patients experiencing bedsores.  The hospital received high marks for limiting the number of problems during surgery and adhering to general medical practices reducing the instance of errors.

St. Anne’s performed above average across all measurements, earning the “A” grade.  The biggest complaint was also the instance of patients with bedsores and patients experiencing falls and injuries.

Of the over 2000 hospitals rated nationally:

  • 34% of hospitals were graded “A’s,” 24% were “B’s,” 35% were “C’s,” 7% were “D’s,” and less than 1% were “F’s”
  • Five states with the highest percentages of “A” hospitals are Maine, Idaho, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Oregon
  • There were no “A” hospitals in Alaska, South Dakota, and North Dakota
  • Notably, 29 hospitals nationwide have achieved an “A” in every grading update since the launch of the Safety Grade in spring 2012

The information for this survey does not include data during the height of COVID-19.  The organization says the survey is an indication of how well hospitals implemented fundamental safety precautions prior to the pandemic, an important factor in preparedness.
