The candidates running for Fall River School Committee had an opportunity last night to share with voters their vision for the future of Fall River Public Schools at a candidates’ forum hosted by FRCMedia.
Seven of the candidates on the ballot were at the forum; incumbents Kevin Aguiar, Bobby Bailey, Michelle Mimi Larrivee, Shelli Pereira and Sara Rodrigues. They were joined by former school committee member Thomas Khoury and challenger Collin Dias. Newcomer Warren Alves was absent due to an illness and Charles Chase, Jr. was not in attendance.
The candidates focused on a number of topics posed by panelists from FREDTV, WSAR Radio and the Fall River Reporter. Here is how each candidate responded to the question of what qualifications make them suited to serve on the school committee.
The candidates also had the opportunity to offer input as to how the district can address the problem of chronic absenteeism.
The candidates also touched upon improving graduation rates, providing equitable bus transportation, how to spend an increase in state funding for education, the status of the Robert Medeiros Resiliency Preparatory Academy and their thoughts on whether school committee members should be paid at a rate equal to the city council.
