Massachusetts residents who do not have a college degree can now attend community college tuition and fee-free after Governor Maura Healey approved funding for the MassEducate program.
Bristol Community College President Dr. Laura Douglas says free college for SouthCoast residents cannot come at a better time.
Dr. Douglas says new students looking to start in the fall should take the steps now to apply and register for classes, to meet the requirements to qualify for the free college program.
Depending on their level of financial need, students may also qualify for an additional stipend to cover the cost of books and other supplies. Returning students will also see the benefits of MassDducate this fall.
Dr. Douglas says the college is ready to accommodate an influx of new registrations that may be attributed to MassEducate
MassEducate is financed through revenue collected from the state’s millionaire’s tax that adds a 4% surcharge to individuals earning more than one million dollars a year.
There are vocal detractors to the free college program, but Dr. Douglas predicts SouthCoast residents who take advantage of MassEducate will prove them wrong.
The sooner residents apply and register for classes, the better chance they will benefit from MassEducate. Find out more by visiting Bristol’s website or by emailing navigators@bristolcc.edu.
