The number of unemployed across the country is on the rise as businesses have shuttered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The local unemployment rate in Fall River for April has risen more than four times the rate in March.
Fall River’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for April sits at 24.1%, up from 5.7% in March and 5.1% from April 2019.
According to the State Department of Unemployment Assistance, the city’s labor force is set at 39,411, with 29,905 currently employed. 9,506 workers were listed as being unemployed in April.
In comparison, New Bedford has an unemployment rate in April at 24.4%, Brockton 21%, Taunton 21.2%, Lowell 17.1% and Lawrence 27.6%.
Unemployment rates in the Fall River suburbs: Somerset, 20.6% (4.0% in March); Swansea, 18.4% (3.3% in March); Westport, 19.7% (4.7% in March); Freetown, 18.2% (3.5% in March).
It was announced on Friday that the Massachusetts unemployment rate for April sits at 15.9%, up from 3.0% in March.
