A bill before state legislators seeks to add the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number on all student IDs in public middle and high schools, as well as public or private colleges and universities.
Samaritans Southcoast is one of the organizations that seeks passage of the legislation. Executive Director Darcy Lee says the move will be a non-intrusive way for students to be reminded of the emotional support services organizations like Samaritans provide.
Ms. Lee says youth of today face emotional challenges not experienced by those in the past, and being aware of the lifeline may provide them with comfort during stressful times.
Since the launch of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, Samaritans Southcoast has seen an increase in individuals seeking help.
Ms. Lee says that as 988 becomes more a part of one’s emergency contact list, it will strengthen mental health counseling as an acceptable form of personal healthcare.
Ms. Lee expects the bill to receive a favorable recommendation and passage by the legislature soon.
