Most of the 10,000-plus students within the Fall River Public Schools return to the classroom next Wednesday, August 30. Leadership is dedicated to adhering to its plans to improve academic outcomes.
For the third year, the district has been bolstered by increased state funding for local education. Superintendent of Schools Maria Pontes says the increase in money has allowed for the expansion of staff and services for students that have made a difference in educational attainment with more work to be done.
The superintendent says the district this year will be promoting the social media hashtag #ShowUpFRPS as a way to engage students interested in school and lowering absenteeism.
Ms. Pontes says the district is still in need of Special Education, Math and English as a Second Language instructors before the year starts but it is in a much better position this summer than a year ago in filling open positions. The system has also made a concerted effort to ensure curriculum instruction is consistent across all schools.
The school system is able to expand its Pre-K offerings for the second year in a row.
With the focus on improvement in the classroom, the district is also providing expanded after-school activities in some areas.
