Dozens of residents from the 4th Congressional District, which includes Fall River, participated in a Q & A session with Congressman Jake Auchincloss at Durfee High School Saturday afternoon.
The congressman spent an hour taking questions from over twenty constituents mainly focusing on the uncertainties created by executive orders and policies initiated by President Donald Trump during his first month in office.
Regardless of what’s taking place in Washington, Congressman Auchincloss told the crowd he is committed to protecting the values he deems important to the district.
Among the congressman’s priorities are protecting the services that benefit many Americans. He said he would fight against a proposal to close the Social Security office in Fall River, claiming fraud within the department is misguided.
Congressman Auhcincloss was asked whether he would moderate his views given that Fall River and many other communities in Bristol County supported President Trump in last year’s election. He said he wants to work in a bipartisan way with Republicans on issues, including paying for tax cuts. But so far the other side is not willing to negotiate, instead seeking cuts that will negatively impact millions of Americans.
The congressman said he is in favor of creating laws to make housing and the cost of living more affordable and resurrecting a bill that would make meaningful changes to the country’s immigration policy.
Congressman Auchincloss says despite the reaction of some Democrats over President Trump’s first month in office he does not feel the country is in a constitutional crisis. He remains concerned that misinformation and disinformation have overshadowed the truth for many Americans.
