The cemetery clean-up issues in Fall River will finally be addressed now that the Board of Park Commissioners has agreed to set up a new three-member subcommittee to study how the city should care for its historic cemeteries.
The agreement came last night, approximately two months after ceramic urns and planters were removed from grave sites at Oak Grove Cemetery, which angered many residents who have had their own in place on family plots for years.
The board agreed to set up the new subcommittee during an agenda item to review a cemetery action plan submitted by the Friends of Oak Grove Cemetery.
Reportedly, the subcommittee will review and discuss rules for Oak Grove and the city’s other cemeteries, and added that it is important that residents attend the meetings to air concerns.
Last month during a special meeting, the Park Board of Commissioners accepted full responsibility for ordering the clean sweep at Oak Grove that resulted in about 200 Planters being removed from grave sites. In addition, city councilors also met to discuss ways to solve the problem.
