The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education has approved a new Veterinary Health Care Associate’s in Applied Science program at Bristol Community College.

BCC’s introduction of the Veterinary Health Care program is based on labor market data and extensive input from industry partners regarding hiring projections and industry vacancies. Veterinary Services was identified as an occupation with a high median wage ($16+/hour) and a high rate of projected growth in Massachusetts from 2006-2016 about 33 percent.

The Veterinary Health Care program prepares entry-level veterinary technician assistants to practice under the supervision of certified veterinarians and animal rehabilitation experts a variety of animal care and wellness settings. Participants will gain the principles, attitudes, and experience needed to work as veterinary technician assistants in veterinary offices and hospitals, animal shelters, wildlife rehabilitation centers, and laboratory animal facilities.

Community partnerships with Forever Paws Animal Shelter, Animal Instincts Exotic Animal Pet Store, and Stoney Creek Farm have been established to provide for hands-on instructional activities required by the program with a variety of species

The BCC Fall River Campus, 777 Elsbree Street, will house the Animal Science classes, including lab-related classes, required for the program.
