The first words out of a BCC student’s mouth was: “Ouch,” when he learned about the new 2015-2016 school policy instituted at his former High School.

Twenty-year old Treveills Oliver graduated from BMC Durfee in 2014.

When told about his Durfee’s new policy to extend class time from 50 to 72 minutes, Treveliss was not entirely in agreement.

“I think going to class for an hour and twelve minutes longer would make it more difficult for some students to focus on their subjects,” he tells Frcconnect.org. “For me, 50 minutes was a long time because I had concentration issues, so I don’t know how some students will handle the longer class periods.”

According to School Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown, class time was extended to give students more of an opportunity to get fully focused, and get engaged in each subject.

“While I agree with the superintendent on one hand, I think such a policy will only work if teachers take the time to get students more engaged and energized so they don’t get bored,” he says adding, “Simply lecturing them will not work for many students.”

While Treveills may not agree with longer class periods, he does believe students should take advantage of the five instead of seven-period-a-day policy also instituted.

“It’s a good idea to give the students more opportunity to take electives,” he says, adding, “And I would encourage all the students to take a sport. Being involved in sports gives people a feeling of being on a team.”

Wednesday, September 9th is the first day of school for students in the Fall River Public School System.
