Since the nationwide launch of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline on July 16, more and more people are seeking support.
Darcy Lee, executive director of Samaritans Southcoast, says the easy-to-remember number can be used for anyone in distress, not just those who may be contemplating suicide.
Ms. Lee says Samaritans Southcoast, which serves individuals from both Bristol and Norfolk counties, is one of five centers in Massachusetts fully staffed 24/7 to directly answer local 988 calls. Thus far the response to the new line has been positive.
The 988 lifeline is not just for individuals seeking help. A family member or friend can also utilize the 988 lifeline to express concerns over the well-being of a loved one.
Ms. Lee says normally during the warmer weather months Samaraitans Southcoast will see an increase in the number of lifeline calls.
Samaritans Southcoast is currently seeking to hire additional lifeline operators as well as volunteers. For more information, you can call the Samaritans Southcoast business line at 508-679-9777.
